The Frank stuff, fucked up but self-aware of it and trying to change, that's not something I've seen often - usually he's just a two-dimensional abusive stepfather figure. You get awesome-points for making him a person.
And the Kirk/Bones comfort bit was lovely :)
And they're both (all three, if you count his father) proud of him, which has to mess with his head.
